The Women Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (WOWICAN) was established in Kaduna State in 1984 under the pioneering leadership of Deaconess Modupe Adesida, who served alongside Pastor Sarah Zongo, Mrs. Amatu Kolawe, Mrs. Gwani, and Mrs. Bobzon.
In 1987, Pastor Mrs. Dinatu Achimugu was elected Chairperson, serving with Pastor Sarah Zongo, Mrs. Amatu Kolawe, Mrs. Bobzon, Mrs. Gwani, Princess Leah Olusiyi Solomon, Mrs. Michelle Bongi, Mrs. Ruth Pantuvo, Mrs. Emily O., and Mrs. Ann from Kogi. At this stage, WOWICAN functioned as a fellowship of women from different denominations. This tenure, lasting from 1987 to 2004, remains the longest in the association’s history.
From 2005 to 2012, Barrister Regina Chizoba Okafor of the CSN bloc led WOWICAN, serving with Hon. Princess Leah Olusiyi Solomon, Amb. Ekene Ofodile, Evangelist Grace Alade, Pastor Grace Olukemi Metibogun, Rev. Mary Ebunoluwa Oduntan, Evangelist Besslyn Onwubuya, Dr. Felicia Obiageli Chukwuneka, and Hon. Charity Agule. During her temporary absence abroad in 2011, Hon. Leah Olusiyi Solomon, then National Vice Chairperson I, served as Acting Chairperson until her return in 2012.
In 2012, Pastor Dr. Mabel Oyin Sowolu (CCN) was elected Chairperson, serving until 2018. Her team included Mrs. Mary Okojo (CSN, 1st Vice Chairperson), Hon. Mrs. Charity Agule (TEKAN/ECWA, 2nd Vice Chairperson), Pastor Dr. Comfort E. Adu (National Secretary), M/C Derifa O. Odoh (Assistant Secretary), Prophetess Evelyn Abu (Treasurer), Evangelist Mrs. Jacqueline E. Sodo (Financial Secretary), Rev. Dr. G. Onephrojire (Assistant Financial Secretary), Lady Rose Patricia Agur (National PRO), Rev. Dr. Mercy Akpama (Prayer Coordinator), Amb. Mrs. Helen D. James (Welfare Officer), Mrs. Abigail Joke Ojetola (Assistant Welfare Officer), and Chief Mrs. Elizabeth Adegbuyi (Provost II).
From 2018 to 2023, Deaconess Amb. Victoria Bolanle Ihesiulor (CPFN/PFN) served as Chairperson. Her tenure was marked by the passing of Hon. Rev. Mrs. Omatsola Williams in active service. Rev. Dr. Uzoaku Williams (CCN) was elected to fill the gap and later moved to the National CAN leadership. Rev. Dr. Mrs. Onoghoete Omo-Ikirodah completed the tenure. Other officers included Senior Rev. Mother Amb. Julia Akerele (National Secretary, OAIC), Hon. Mrs. Elizabeth Abuk (Assistant Secretary, CSN), Mrs. Florence Obed Dada (Treasurer, TEKAN/ECWA), Rev. Amb. Lois Angula (Director of Ecumenism & Interfaith, CPFN/PFN), Mrs. Victoria Paul Bagoji (Director of Planning, Research & Strategy, CCN), Senior AP Mother Glory Ekaso (Director of National Issues & Social Welfare, OAIC), Mrs. Ndidi Gertrude Onwuegbuna (Director of Education, Women & Youth Development, CSN), and Barr. Mrs. Juliana Bako Saleh (Director of Legal & Public Affairs). Their tenure ended on October 28, 2023.
